Local Government Reorganisation in Hampshire – latest update
The Government has confirmed that Local Government Reorganisation in Hampshire will proceed, but the original proposals are being reconsidered and the timetable has been delayed by a year.
Published: 2 November 2026
Residents may be aware that plans to reorganise local government across Hampshire and the Solent area have been subject to a number of changes in recent months.
The Government has confirmed that Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) will continue, but the original decision on how councils in Hampshire should be reorganised has been withdrawn and is being reconsidered.
What has happened?
In March 2026, the Government announced plans to replace the existing council structure across mainland Hampshire with four new unitary authorities, with a separate arrangement for the Isle of Wight. These new councils were originally expected to take over in April 2028, following elections in May 2027.
However, following a legal challenge by Hampshire County Council, the Government withdrew its decision in September 2026 and began a review of the proposals.
On 29 October 2026, the Government confirmed that Local Government Reorganisation would continue, but that all previously submitted proposals for Hampshire and the Solent area would be reconsidered. An initial decision is expected before Christmas 2026 or early 2027.
What is the revised timetable?
The Government has confirmed the following revised timetable:
- May 2027: Elections will take place for the existing councils, as currently constituted.
- May 2028: Elections are expected for the new unitary authorities.
- 1 April 2029: The new unitary authorities are expected to take over responsibility for local government services.
This represents a one-year delay to the original timetable.
What does this mean for Ewshot?
For the time being, there are no changes to the existing council arrangements. Ewshot remains within Hart District Council and Hampshire County Council, and residents should continue to contact these councils as normal for the services they provide.
Importantly, the final structure of local government across Hampshire has not yet been decided. The number and boundaries of any new unitary authorities will become clearer once the Government has completed its review.
